After a day of travel to the Danum Valley http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danum_Valley_Conservation_Area I settled in to my cabin at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge. The Danum Valley is deep in primary rainforest in central Sabah and is hundreds of thousands of years old. My first impresion was wow! this place is an awesome jungle! then wow! this lodge is decadent, and I was right on both counts. The deluxe cabins all had Jacuzzi on a balcony overlooking the river. I was in a standard, I didnt have time (or inclination) to sit in one anyway. Really I was either walking in the jungle, stuffing my face at the buffets or sleeping. Three of my favorite things ( ok its a big list ). Yes dear, your definately # one, But hey, lets not think of it as a top ten style list lets think of it as a cyclical kind of rotation, kay?
The food buffets were tremendous, equalling anything I have ever been too, never-mind deep in the jungle. Every time you looked like you even had an inkling for food drink or whatever, someone was at your side asking you by name, if there was anything you needed.
I had a bird specialist guide (one of the festival competition winners) with me for every walk each day. I was trying to get a keeper photograph of a Trogon for my Business logo so he was working very hard to call one in the entire time. It was a tiring few days, the terrain is quite varied, and the trails were muddy. I had only one encounter with a small leach on my boot, others not so lucky, it was fun discussing leach adventures in the evening. One lady from England was drawing them like a magnet. He He
I ran into my friends from Singapore, John and Anna Arifin again as well as a few others that were at the Festival so that was fun as well. We traveled back to Lahud Datu together, they were kind enough to share their allotted baggage weight so I did not have to pay.
